Woohoo! It’s the first of the month and for all of you Altenew fans out there, that means Build-A-Flower release day! I’m excited to be joining Altenew on their hop today showcasing the brand new Parrot Tulips BAF. You can stay tuned to the end of this post to find the full hop list and the next stop, or head on over to the Altenew blog to start at the top!

These tulips are so pretty! I’d never heard of a Parrot Tulip – they’re stunning in real life photos, and this set really does them justice with the layering stamps so perfect to create the dimension of the curls of the petals. I created two very different cards today, as I always like to show different looks to show the versatility of these sets. My first card features traditional layering stamping to create a colorful bouquet of tulips.

My tulips each use a different ink family. I used Vineyard Berry, Heart Beat, Coral Bliss and Pink Pearl for the red tulip, Pink Diamond, Pinkalicious, Rubellite, and Cosmic Berry for the purple tulip, and Razzleberry, Purple Wine, Puffy Heart and Rose Quartz for the pink tulip. The leaves are Bamboo and Moss. I stamped and die cut them out with the coordinating dies – I love repeat stamping the layering stamps. You can leave each layer in your MISTI and just switch out your ink colors, making it quicker to create each of the full images.

I also stamped out the sentiment in two of the darker inks and fussy cut it out. I used a panel of Altenew Woodgrain Powder cardstock trimmed to A2 4.25″ x 5.5″. I arranged all of the die cuts and the sentiment with foam tape / squares and to finish, splattered with Antique Gold spray and adhered a smattering of clear confetti.

My next card uses one of the sketches from inside the stamp insert as inspiration – a heat embossed gold on black cardstock. I heat embossed one of the layers of the tulips, as well as the stem and a leaf in gold on Jet Black cardstock and die cut them out. I also heat embossed the ‘love’ and ‘yourself’ sentiments in the same way and fussy cut them out.

I created my background with coldpress watercolor cardstock, and adding lots of depth with Altenew Watercolor Brush Markers, using less water and more color to get a bright and intense color wash. These are from the Tropical Fiesta set. I blended them together and when dry, ran the panel through with the Perfect Poinsettia dry embossing folder. I also added some Antique Gold splatters which look gorgeous against the deep watecolor brush marker colors.

To finish, I adhered the images and sentiments with foam tape, the added a few gold dots to finish.

  6. Wow! I smiled when you said “less traditional” and then my jaw dropped when I saw card #2! I absolutely love it and can’t wait to try your background technique (although I don’t know if I have bright colors like that!) And your tulip is a perfect contrast to the bright background.
