I’ve been playing with my Daniel Smith watercolors again this weekend and another Power Poppy stamp set – this time it’s the beautiful Simply Camellias.
I’m doing no line watercoloring again so I stamped the image onto some hot press watercolor paper using Antique Linen Distress Ink and my MISTI. As this ink is water soluble, it works great for this technique, and the color is particularly good for flowers as any color left behind from the ink looks more natural – particular on leaf veins. The hot press is much smoother than cold press paper, which means it’s great for stamping. It also dries incredibly fast so you can do much finer details if you choose to.
When stamped, I added my panel to some hard board and taped it down with Frog tape (the delicate yellow version which is great as you can see through it if you want to create even borders). I then used my Daniel Smith watercolors to paint the image, adding several layers to build up contrast. I haven’t listed out the colors here as I used what was already on my palette, however I think it was a mix of Sap Green, Azo Yello, Burnt Sienna and Piemontite Primatek for the leaves and buds. The florals were Sugulite Primatek, Cactus Flower, Moonglow and Quinacridone Rose. I used a number 2 round Silver Brush for all of it.
When the image was dry I went carefully around the image with clean clear water and then dropped in Sugulite and Phthalo Blue (Green Shade) in very dilute amounts to create the background. When that was dry I added some spatters in a mix of the colors already mentioned.
The sentiment is also from the same Power Poppy set. I heat embossed it using Versamark ink and Antique Gold embossing powder by Simon Says Stamp. It is THE best sentiment. You can literally put it on almost any card and use it for anything – so versatile!
To finish my card, I trimmed it down to 4″ x 5.5″ and layered it with fun foam using double sided tape onto a 4.25″ x 5.5″ card base made from Neenah Solar White 110lb card.

This is the first time I used this paper for watercoloring, and I found that it really holds the color of the marker, so the tulip a very vibrant in hue.
